What Size Skateboard Do Pros Ride?

The size of skateboard that professionals ride is completely up to their personal preference. There are many professionals who ride 8″ skateboards but then there are many pros who only skate slightly larger boards that range from 8.25″ to 8.5″. Most professional street skaters will ride decks that range from 8″ to 8.5″. This range seems to be the most common across the many different professional skaters in the world. This size skateboard provides the stability that they need but is also small enough for them to control and flip.

Larger skateboards will be better for those who have larger feet or are taller or heavier. But there are many skaters who just prefer the feel of a larger skateboard because it feels more stable under their feet. On the contrary, there are many pro skaters who prefer smaller skateboards that range from 7.5″ to 8″. This is typical for professional skaters who are smaller in stature, have smaller feet, or just simply prefer the feel of a smaller deck.

Why Do Most Pros Ride 8.5″ Skateboards?

The size of the skateboard will have a direct correlation with the skateboard truck size. This can influence what size skateboard pros will ride but it seems that most pros will ride a 8.5″ skateboard. There are many pros that choose to ride smaller boards but this seems to be the standard size for most professional as well as beginner skaters. 8.5″ decks are the most commonly manufactured skateboard because it provides stability but is still small enough that you can control it in the air.

If you are looking for a new skateboard, we recommend looking up your favorite professional skater and seeing what board they skate. But it is important to understand that it is all about personal preference and what you find comfortable. Your favorite pro skater might find a smaller board more comfortable then you will, but it is worth testing this out to find out what is the best option for your skating style.

Do Pros Have To Ride A Certain Size Skateboard?

Pro skaters have a lot of freedom in what size and style of board they can ride. They will have to ride the equipment sent to them by their sponsors as this is part of their professional agreement, but often times their sponsors can customize their boards for them. If a professional would like to test out riding a slightly smaller board, then they can ask their sponsor to manufacture a slightly smaller board for them. This is a luxury they have as professional skaters that the average skateboarder wont have.

As an amateur skateboarder you are forced to ride whatever size boards that the brand sells. If your favorite skateboard brand only sells 8″ boards, then you typically won’t be able to ride anything else. Very rarely will skateboard brands customize their boards for skaters who aren’t professionals.
